Crafting easy holiday decorating ideas on a budget

Decorating your home for the holidays doesn’t need to be expensive. Below are a few ideas of decor items you can create with some items around your house.

Marble tray savvy elegance

One clever holiday decor idea is to transform a common bathroom item – a marble tray – into a sophisticated holiday display. With a battery-operated candle, ornaments, green picks, and berry branches, you can create a simple yet elegant arrangement suitable for a console or coffee table. The choice of flameless candles ensures safety, making this arrangement versatile for various spaces.

I used a silver base to place the candle on to elevate it a bit and help it stand out a bit since the candle is white and the tray is white. The silver base also ties in with the mercury glass ornaments which you can secure in place by using some double-sided tape. Try to choose ornaments that are shiny and reflect the light from the candle and other lights around the space, adding to the festive atmosphere. Try to choose ornaments of different sizes. For instance, I used a slightly smaller mercury glass ornament with a ribbed effect to add some interest.

I’ve had these ornaments for over 16 years.  Even if your ornaments are a bit pricy when you first buy them, if you take care of them, they will last you for many, many years. I used the same ornaments on this marble tray that I have on my Christmas tree in order to carry the same color scheme across all my decorations.

To finish this decor piece, add a few pinecones and greenery in between the ornaments and candle.

Dining table decor with a gold metal tray

Now, let’s talk about transforming your dining table into a stylish haven with just a few simple elements. My go-to for this setup is a long gold metal tray – a versatile find from HomeGoods, though any similar tray will work wonders. The handles make it easily movable, an essential feature when you want to transition seamlessly from decorative moments to dinner time. Placing such trays at the center of your styling allows for a quick relocation, decorations and all, without disrupting the aesthetic flow. It’s the perfect blend of practicality and aesthetic finesse.

Putting together your table’s centerpiece

Now, let’s delve into the art of crafting a centerpiece. Start with using remote-control, battery-operated flameless candles, to create a dynamic arrangement. Begin with the tallest candle as the centerpiece, strategically positioning the others to create a visually engaging zig-zag effect.

In the image above you can see how I’ve placed the candles in a zig-zag pattern with the tallest candles in the back and the shorter ones in the front.

Introduce green picks, juniper cedar sprays, shimmery berries, small pinecones, and frosted picks for a touch of winter charm. Decorative pebbles, in this case, white with a pearly finish and muted gold glass pebbles, add a layer of sophistication.

And here is the finished product. Simple and elegant.

These elements come together to form holiday decor ideas that I like to call ‘movable arrangements’. Pay attention to every angle, ensuring a harmonious view from all sides. The pebbles, strategically placed, fill in the ‘bald spots,’ adding depth and completing the look. So, whether you’re enjoying dinner or admiring the arrangement from your couch, your stylish centerpiece remains a visual delight.

Here is another example of how you can use a wooden tray and some glass candle holders with pebbles and pine cones to make a festive decorative piece for your kitchen counter or kitchen table.

Holiday decorating ideas bonus tip: Revamping your wreaths

Before we dive further into holiday decorating ideas, here’s a bonus tip from me. Refresh the look of your wreaths annually by playing with bow colors, ribbon types, and adding or removing elements to match your evolving color scheme. Remember to carefully pack them to preserve them and be able to reuse them every year.

Contrary to popular belief, wreaths can be used for more than just door or window decorations. You can also use mini wreaths as centerpieces on your dining table, as a decorative item on your coffee table, with a candle, or even as a chair decoration, hanging off the back.

If every year you want to switch around your decor, all you need to do is replace the ribbon, and perhaps even use different colored berries or candles. Try using red berries, or silver and gold candles.
